Our customer wanted to dress up a tired fireplace, we sourced a northern barn board beam to sit on top of the ledger stone work. The beam is about 250 years old and is loaded with character. It is hand hewn, probably right on site when they were building the barn. The axe marks are very distinct, can you imagine, they basically chopped down a tree and stood on top of it with a broad axe to square it up into a beam. Not your typical piece of wood.
